Depending on the year model of your car, most of your weatherstripping is 20+ years old now and is probably dry, cracked, and brittle. My '89 coupe was in dire need of new run channel weatherstripping. New weatherstripping can seal the cabin of your Mustang and keep wind noise, water, and all of the other elements out. Installing these pieces is not hard at all and all you need to do is set aside a few hours on the weekend to get both sides taken care of. Check out our installation video below and the written instructions with pictures below that. Installation process may be slightly different for 79-86 Mustangs.Tools Needed:
Next you can move down to your door armrest assembly. Remove your armrest plugs and there will be (2) 10mm bolts to remove. Disconnect the door lock/window switches.Next you can grab your door panel removal tool and separate the door panel clips from the door panel. There are 12 per door. After you remove the 12 clips from the door you will need to pull up and out on the door panel. You should be looking at the bare door now.
Now you will need to pull back the door panel moisture barrier and grab your removal tool or a flat head screwdriver and pry on the old weatherstrip. Work your way up to the window frame pulling on it and try to bring it all out in one piece. Once you pull it out you'll see the bare window frame. While you have this out it would be the perfect opportunity to paint the trim using our SEM Black Exterior Trim Paint. Now it's time to grab the run channel weatherstrip and work it's way into place. You'll want to start it off by putting it into the corner of the window frame and use your paint dip stick to push it into the channel. You will have to "massage" it into place to clean out the final placement but it should look something like this when you first put it in.
Once you work it into the corner and get the weatherstripping into it's channel straight down you can start moving forward toward the mirror. Grab your paint dip stick and start pushing it into the channel. Now that you have the upper part done you will move down to the lower part of the door. There are two bolts that you will need to loosen up or remove if necessary. This is the channel the weatherstripping runs down and sits in while keeping the window on track.
Once you get that piece loose you will need to reach in and grab the weatherstripping and pinch it together to fit into the channel. Once you get it into the channel you will now start the process of adjusting it into place. I hooked my window switch back up while the panel was still off and rolled the window up and down to get the new weatherstripping pushed into place and adjusted correctly. Once you get this process completed the new weatherstripping should sit into place and look like this.
Tighten up the two bracket bolts when you get the window back into place and start the process of putting everything back together. It will all go back in just as it came out.
Now you can enjoy a quiet, weatherproof Mustang!
