The 1987 Mustang was available in two models, LX and GT. The car came standard with the 88 hp 2.3 L four cylinder wither either a five-speed manual, or four-speed automatic transmission. The 5.0 L V-8 engine was optional, but was given a sequential electronic multipoint fuel injection system, and open-chamber cylinder heads, which brought it up to 225 hp. Both models were built with coil spring MacPherson struts in the front, and a four link coil spring suspension in the rear. The GT was upgraded with variable rate springs and gas-pressurized shocks and struts. The LX taillights were changed only slightly, but the GT was given louvered taillights. Both models lost the louvered rear quarter glass, and instead got a single piece of glass with the word "Mustang" across the bottom.

1987 Ford Mustang Handling

The 1987 Ford Mustang redesign wasn't just about styling and power. Despite the familiarity of the relatively simple chassis, the 1987 Mustang received unusual praise for its cornering and driveability. AutoWeek said, "You look forward to cornering with a passionate grip on the steering wheel. You start to believe the only reason for the quick [V-8] is to keep you from wasting valuable time on straights so you can find more rewarding section of two-lane."
