The first three numbers give you the width of the tire in mm. So if you are looking at a 295/45/17 tire, this means the tire is 295 mm wide. The second set of two numbers is the “aspect ratio” that tells you how tall the sidewall is in millimeters. In the case of the 295/45 tires referenced above that means you take 295 multiple by .45 (45%) to get the sidewall height of 132.75mm. Hope this helps you out.

I have 275/40/17 MT on my 88 mustang now, How much bigger can I go on the wheel and still fit the car is this 295/45/17 better than what I have ..What is happening I 'm getting wheel spin I'm thinking on selling the 17" and getting the 15" wheel and tire and going with the 295/60/15 if I can't find a 17" tire to work.

It will require some massaging, but lots of folks run 10 to 10.5'' wheels on the back with this tire size. To give you an idea, google 295/45/17 on fox body and search images, and there are quite a few pics.
