My mechanic said to clear up small vibration felt through my steering wheel that I should replace the "intermediate steerig shaft". Is that what this is? Also, my car is a 1990 5.0 GT with power steering . Is this the correct part?

Norman, yes this is the intermediate shaft your mechanic is referring to. This particular model will do away with the composite coupler and give much better steering feel and a sense of control.

Both are going to have similar dimensions. If you are currently rubbing, I would inspect the motor mounts. If they are worn, they will allow the driveline to sag and cause interference issues with the shaft.

Correct, I did this last year to mine. If the rag joint is worn out, it makes sense to upgrade while replacing. The feel is much improved over stock.
