Factory retainers are made entirely of aluminum which was prone to wear out prematurely. The after-market upgrade uses a steel sleeve for the throwout bearing to ride on instead of the original aluminum resulting in longer life expectancies.
The Mustang Input Bearing Retainer on T5 equipped Mustangs also doubles as a Clutch Release Bearing (Throw-Out Bearing) sleeve. From the factory these Bearing Retainers were made of an aluminum base & sleeve & often developed wear grooves on the sleeve causing the Release Bearing to bind & create all manor of Clutch Engagement & Disengagement issues.
I have been experiencing a chirping, clattering metallic sound the past two clutch jobs...I thought it was a worn out clutch fork and pivot or TOB....but as it turns out the sleeve pulled out of the flange and so the TOB gets cocked on an angle and rubs on the pressure plate fingers.....anyway, the T5 Steel Brg Retainer part comes with the input shaft seal already installed in the rear of the part (see picture), so there is no need to buy the seal to do the job as i did. It is a quality, Genuine Ford OEM part.
