Ford Mustang - 1979 (79) - 1980 (80) - 1981 (81) - 1982 (82) - 1983 (83) - 1984 (84) - 1985 (85) - 1986 (86) - 1987 (87) - 1988 (88) - 1989 (89) - 1990 (90) - 1991 (91) - 1992 (92) - 1993 (93)
Why go through the hassle and expense of rebuilding the broken T5 in your 83 to 93 Mustang 5.0, when you can pick up a heavy duty brand new unit for just a few dollars more. The Ford racing M 7003z super duty T5 transmission gives you a lot of bang for your buck.
Starting out at the front, it has a steel bearing retainer already installed. And it has the 93 cobra style pocket bearing on the input shaft. The double Molly second, third, and counter shaft gears give you increased durability. The case is the latest revision offering you the highest strength. It also has installed the desirable 7 tooth speedometer gear. So if you're replacing an eight tooth drive gear unit, then you need to replace your driven gear accordingly. And you can use our speedometer gear calculator to help you out with that.
Third and fourth have carbon blocker rings. And all the synchronizers and bearings are upgraded throughout. It has a stock style Mustang shifter installed on it already, but you can pop that off and install a short throw shifter, like our SV Mongoose.
This is quite literally a bolt in upgrade for any 83 to 93 Mustang 5.0 that originally came with the T5. It also features a much more friendly set of gear ratios. First gear being 295, second gear 194, third gear 134, fourth is a direct one to one, and fifth gear is a very highway friendly 0.63. The input shaft features a Stockton splines. And the output shaft features a stock 28.
It does come dry, so you'll need to add fluid. Recommended oils are Mercon or Textron 3 automatic transmission fluid, GM synchro mesh, or my favorite The Royal Purple synchro max. Don't freak out when you look in the tail shaft, there is a rubber plug there to block off any debris from getting in your new transmission. Whenever you shove the drive shaft in, it'll push it into place.
This heavy duty world class transmission is rated at 300 pound foot torque capacity. However, they have been known to handle quite a bit more than that. Remember the killers of T5 transmissions are aggressive clutches and sticky tires. So if you stick to something in the stage one clutch line and don't go over a drag radial, your T5 will probably live a long and happy life. You can grab yours at latemodelrestoration.com.
