The terms 1G 2G and 3G all refer to the "generation" of the alternator. 1G came on the 79-85 Mustangs and had an external regulators.In 1986 they swapped over to the 2G which looked basically the same as the 1G but they had an internal regulator. The 3G is the most common one sold today. The housing looks newer and is slightly larger that the 1&2G alternators. For example, our SVE 130 amp alternator is a 3G. If your car is an86-93 it would have come wired from the factory for a 2G alternaor. If it was 85 or older it would have the external metal regulator that looks something like this on the fender apron
